It’s been called Chromoting, but the fact that Google is partnering with companies that specialize in remote access tells me that perhaps that name is not going to be official at all.
Google and RealVNC have announced a partnership to provide remote access capability. According to the press release that was sent to me, this functionality is going to be built into both the browser and the operating system.
“With more than 120 million users around the world, Chrome’s focus on speed, simplicity and security has made it an exciting platform for innovation,” said Chee Chew, engineering director at Google. “We are thrilled to tap into RealVNC’s proven technology and expertise to complement our existing initiative.”
RealVNC is a small UK based outfit, but they have experience that reaches back over fifteen years in this space, lending them the proper engineering talent to make remoting into legacy apps a reality for Google much easier than the company taking on the task themselves.
“They have a lot of clever people working at Google but sometimes these things are harder than they seem. We’ve been doing things for 15 years and we have a couple of important factors in our favour. Firstly, we’ve so it’s easy to port, that’s something that’s vital for all the OEM work we do,” says Real VNC’s CEO, Andy Harter.
The Real VNC collaboration will be based on consumer-focuses interests, seeing as how the Citrix Receiver project appears to be the way that Chrome OS devices will be able to access enterprise software. This was demonstrated during Google’s Chrome press conference in December. A video of that is located here.
